Are you one of those parents with more the one child that for one of many reasons never did a cake smash session for your oldest? I am! I have been a professional photographer for a few years and before then we lived in Italy but at the time that I had my first two children we didn’t do cake smashes, so they never got one!
Seven years later we had another baby and of course I went crazy! I did monthly photos of him, I created different set ups every time (you can see in my personal projects). Then it was time for the famous 1 year cake smash session and guess what? I started feeling guilty for not doing all this for my first two. I felt terrible for days and considered skipping it with Luca too, but then I came up with a solution! Do a triple age cake smash for the three of them together! As soon as I told Cosimo and Emma they were thrilled with the idea and wanted to do it immediately (at the time Luca was barely 10 months….). My guilt disappeared and I could start planning! Baby Luca got a personalized cake smash too a few days before his birthday (to test his reaction) and …….he hated it!
Since my my kids were born in February, March and May, I thought today (April 9th) could be a good day to do this crazy triple shoot!
The decor: Emma patiently helped me put together the banners. I opted for something simple and colorful, so we picked a different color to represent each one of them. I did not want to clash a bunch of themes together, it would have been busy and very awkward, plus the focus had to be on kids and their crazy reactions not on what was surrounding them. Emma got a double color banner because she is the only girl so she got to be a little extra special!
The cakes: As a mom I had all the best intentions of baking 3 beautiful cakes, frost them all on my own, and proudly photograph them, but then I gave in to Target’s bakery and the time I would save if they took care of that detail. The cakes were just perfect, simple and very colorful also if not made by me!
The process: I made my oldest and most excited kids sit in front of their cakes, I really wanted to take a few nice shots before the destruction began. It was so hard keeping Cosimo from dumping his face in the cake, since that had been his plan for months! Luca was not at all convinced about today’s form of entertainment and escaped from the set shortly after watching Cosimo go wild. Initially I thought that he was scared by the way his brother’s face looked after that close up with the cake.
So we tried putting him back in, making him touch and eat some of the frosting, but he ran away as fast as possible crying desperately. My theory is proving itself right: boys hate cake smashes! Of all the boys I have shot during these session, not one has liked it, they all cried. Luca got to experience it twice and we got the same result! Hopefully I have not scarred him for life.
At least Cosimo and Emma loved every moment of it and I could not seem to stop shooting, they were having a blast and it was hilarious to see how they interact with the cakes and with each other (Emma has been attacked at least 4 times by Cosimo and parts of his cake). They ate some of it, laughed a lot, smashed parts of cake on each other, created a cake lotion to spread all over their bodies, created an amazing cake mask for the face and just had a blast! Luca did peek back in for a few minutes but he was simply trying to steal the balloons and then he ran off yelling!
Clean up and final thoughts: this is defiantly not my favorite part specially considering the mess we did. It took a while to get them cleaned up, I don’t think they wanted to get rid of all that frosting they had spread all over them. Actually Emma’s face looked green in some spots for most of the day!
After this experience I have come to the conclusion that it is more fun to do a cake smash for older kids then for 1 year olds, they really enjoy it and it honestly is the most amusing type of session specially when the kids are having a great time! My only concern now is that they might want to repeat this experience every year…….
